Mark the gallery owner has been able to create a space that is safe and welcoming for anyone in the creative scene. The space has been used to showcase films, celebrate community and showcase talent all over NYC. I highly recommend this place as it not only works as a gallery but as a center giving back to the bronx community.

Amazing gallery. Mark is the Kindest!!! This summer they used their platform to create a supplies and food drive for the community. They are true lovers of art and made sure Bronx artists had supplies to create during the months of quarantine. The work is amazing and nothing like it. True artist and true art.

Mark West Center for the Arts

The Mark West Center for the Arts (MWCA), also known as House of Mark West is a non-profit community organization, gallery and creative hub for artists in the Williamsburg-Bushwick Art Hub. We are black-owned and cater primarily to Black, Brown, LGBTQ, disabled, and young (k-12) artists and creatives. We are a gallery and artist collective that hosts monthly art exhibitions, free grant-writing workshops, open mic competitions, art classes, and town hall meetings.

As one of the only black-owned and queer-owned galleries in NYC, our mission is providing exposure and advocacy for underrepresented artists from all backgrounds.

Through the tv show, we provide marketing and advertising services for local businesses and organizations. We are currently in between production and post-production stages. The TV Show will air on Bronxnet TV this summer.

Mark West's work takes a subversive approach to the reclamation of the Black Man. West uses negro caricatures (blackface) to depict Black people in incredibly artistic, humanist, empowering scenes throughout history. When West studied African art and culture in University-of-Ghana, he learned that the history of Blackface and minstrelsy (or people depicted as jet-black skin and red lips) predated it's usage by Whites in the 18th and 19th century. In fact, Blackface was directly inspired by African Art that extended back to Ancient Khemet. When West paints these images, as a black painter and narrator, he considers his work a reclamation of ancient African Art. He then uses his love of history to paint these Black people as powerful figures throughout time and across cultures. He uses subversion to craft an alternative to the traditional interpretation of Blackface to his version where "Black faces" are in empowering scenes.

As a Black man and a historian with experience in the motherland, West has the duty to create entirely-new narratives of Black People. To West, "when a Black child sees paintings of Black Jesus or Black people in scenes from the Bible or in World-History, it cements us a place in time that is rarely shown. It forces the viewer to see Black-skin on the wall, taking up space unapologetically. Blacks have historically and continue to be forced to reduce oneself. And in light of the rampant police-brutality across our country, to be Black and take-up space is an act of protest. West implores the viewers both Black and non-Black to come in direct confrontation with the Blackness of his images, forcing one to see the beauty of his people and their portraiture; finding beauty in the Blackness.
